Sade Collections is a small photography studio and print room. One artist, one printer, a short list of papers, and work that is made to hang on a wall rather than scroll past.
Sade started in documentary work and moved to the figure after a winter spent photographing coastline. She says the change was smaller than it sounds. A shoulder catches light the same way a dune does, and both of them lose their shape the second you put a flash on them.
She shoots in two settings. On location she works within about ninety minutes of sunrise or sunset, when the light is low enough to describe form without flattening it. In the studio, a north facing room with a single nine foot window, the light holds steady from late morning through the afternoon, which lets a session run long and quiet instead of racing the sun.
Most of the collection is black and white. Colour appears rarely and only when a series needs it, usually fashion or editorial work built around fabric and movement, where the colour is doing something the greyscale version cannot.
The guiding idea is the body as landscape. A back becomes a ridge line, a hip becomes a horizon, a hand at rest reads as something geological. Sade frames tight enough that the subject stops being a portrait and starts being terrain, then leaves in the one detail that gives it back its person.
Everything else is restraint. No fill light, no fog machines, no props brought in to make a picture more interesting than it is. Rooms are stripped before a session rather than dressed. If a frame needs something added to work, it usually did not work to begin with. Retouching is limited to dust removal and local dodging and burning. Skin, texture, and the marks a body actually carries are left alone.
The work is nude, topless, and clothed by turns. It is made and presented as fine art photography. This site is intended for viewers 18 and over.
Roughly a third of the collection never goes on the open wall. Some of it is too quiet to survive a shop page, some of it belongs to a series that only makes sense in full, and some of it Sade would rather show to people who already know the work. That part of the archive lives in the vault.
